How to play 2048

Take a moment with 2048 before moving to another game. Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. Use the example below to understand a decision. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Move the board using an arrow key, swipe, or a direction button.
  2. Equal adjacent tiles combine once per move; their new value is added to your score.
  3. Keep an empty lane where possible. Undo reverses the most recent move.
  4. Use New round to begin with two tiles.

Controls

Use arrow keys, swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

Moving [2, 2, 2, 2] left produces [4, 4, 0, 0], not [8, 0, 0, 0]. Each tile merges at most once in that move. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

A swipe that leaves the board unchanged does not add a new tile. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.

Common questions

Before I begin, what is the goal of 2048?

Reach a 2048 tile, then continue as long as a legal move remains. A full board with no adjacent equal tiles ends the round.

As a new player, how do I control 2048?

For clarity: Use arrow keys, swipe across the board, or tap the four direction buttons.

On this playing page, what example helps explain 2048?

The key detail is this: Moving a row of 2, 2, 2, 0 to the left creates 4, 2, 0, 0 before a new tile appears. The newly merged 4 does not merge again in the same move.

What should I watch out for in 2048?

A swipe that leaves the board unchanged does not add a new tile.

What format does 2048 offer?

Before I begin, which play mode does 2048 use?

For clarity: The mode on this page is Solo. Same-device play uses one screen; this game library does not provide internet matchmaking.
